After Care
Good to Know
Getting a tattoo is exciting, but it’s also a commitment, so plan ahead.
First take a look at the galleries of our 3 skilled artists and decide if there’s one whose work you prefer. Ask for that artist when you visit Pink Armadillo.
Bring as many examples as you want to show what you’d like, so you can request the kind of lettering and art that appeals to you. Typically our artists can have a drawing ready in a week or two.
We don’t take appointments over the phone unless the art and specifics have already been settled between you and the artist.
-
The shop minimum for tattoos is $60
-
A non-refundable drawing fee ranges from $10 to $20 (depending on the size and intricacy of the work)
-
Walk-ins are first-come, first-served, when available
-
By New York state law, you must be 18 years old and have proper identification, regardless of parental consent. No ID, no tattoo! No exceptions!
Day Of Tips
On the day you’re getting your tattoo – whether it’s your first inking or your tenth – follow these tips for the best experience.
-
Take a shower before you come. Your artist is going to be very close to you, so don’t stink them out!
-
Eat something first. A full stomach helps you deal with the excitement and adrenaline rush of getting tattooed, and also helps prevent fainting, vomiting, and other discomforts.
-
Wear loose clothing around the area you’re getting tattooed, and wear clothing that you won’t mind getting some ink on. For intimate tattoos, bring a blanket, towel, or cover-up.
-
Do not bring children. The studio is an adult environment and inappropriate for children. Make prior arrangements for a sitter.
-
Bring a friend along to keep you company, but only one. In the tattooing booth, only one guest is allowed.
After Care Suggestions
Talk to your artist about their particular routines for tattoo aftercare, but keep these general guidelines in mind.
-
Remove your bandage 1 to 2 hours after application. If the bandage is sticking to your skin, moisten it with lukewarm water and then loosen it.
-
Gently but thoroughly wash your tattoo with lukewarm water and an unscented, antibacterial soap, such as Dial or Softsoap. As you’re washing, try to gently wash off any specks of blood or ointment. Dry carefully. Wash and dry the tattoo every few hours on the first day.
-
Either just before bed or the next morning, wash and dry again and apply a very thin layer of ointment or lotion, such as Aquaphor by Eucerin, Palmer’s Original Cocoa Butter Lotion, or a mild, unscented body lotion. Your artist may suggest another brand.
-
Repeat the wash-and-lotion routine 2 to 5 times a day for the next 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the artist’s instructions. If you have known sensitivities or allergies to a product, don’t use it on your tattoo! We will suggest an alternative.
-
Depending on size, location, and style, your tattoo will take 1 to 3 weeks to heal. A sunburn-like flaking, scabbing, and itching are all normal, but don’t itch, scratch, or pick! Allow your tattoo to heal on its own. Picking, scratching, and rubbing scabs off will damage the look of your finished tattoo.
-
Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, baths, and any prolonged soaking. Avoid tanning and extended exposure to the sun while your tattoo is fresh. Once it is healed, use a light sunscreen over the tattoo in order to keep it looking vibrant.
-
With proper tattoo care, a touchup generally is not necessary, but each of our artists offers free touchups for up to 2 months at their discretion.
